Bicycles on a Plane: Landing in Bangkok

On the 19th of December 2011 we landed at Suvarnabhumi International Airport Thailand. Flying Jetstar we managed to get off a 14 hour flight feeling refreshed and ready for anything. Our first adventure greeted us right out of the exit terminal.

Bangkok International Airport is not a simple place to leave on a bicycle. The exit is either a high speed motorway or a taxi. After much discussion we decided to unpack and assemble our bikes in front of the exits and try our luck on the motorway.

If your bikes are in a box and under 20kg you can take them on the plane for free!

We had lights, helmets and action all we needed were directions. Our usual navigation tool, the sun, had gone down so we had to rely on the kindness of  strangers. The strange thing was that every person we asked had a different opinion on how to leave the airport; some said it was impossible, others didn’t know, others waved vaguely in the direction of five different exits.

In the end it turned out to be simple. We stopped and asked every Thai for directions along the road and made it to the backpackers at 11pm or 3am Australian time.

The thing I was most happy about was that Robyn didn’t kill me. 🙂
